US government employee in China reported strange sounds, pressure

A USA official told the AFP newswire that the victim experienced "a variety of physical symptoms" between late 2017 through April 2018. According to medical records first obtained by CBS News, a USA doctor diagnosed the American diplomats as suffering from mild traumatic brain injury.

The spokeswoman, Jinnie Lee, said the department is taking the incident "very seriously". The employee was brought to the United States for medical evaluation and on May 18 the Embassy learned that the clinical findings of the evaluation showed mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI).

Emily Rauhala, the Washington Post's China correspondent reported that the State Department confirmed the embassy employee had been diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury, which USA officials in Cuba also experienced.

The State Department's health advisory noted the cause of the symptoms is unknown.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that "the medical indications are very similar and entirely consistent" with the symptoms reported by Americans working at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba.

"We can not at this time connect it with what happened in Havana but we are investigating all possibilities", a USA embassy official in Beijing told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

A health alert has been issued by the United States embassy in Guangzhou, warning Americans living or working in China to take action if "unusual sounds or piercing noises" are heard.

The department also warned against attempting to locate the source of any unusual sounds. "The Chinese government has assured us they are also investigating and taking appropriate measures". "Instead, move to a location where the sounds are not present".

Officials initially suspected the Americans had been targeted by an acoustic weapon, but media reports have suggested that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been unable to verify any evidence to support that theory. Officials believe some type of sonic weapon may have been used.

They suffered headaches, hearing loss, disorientation and some loss of cognitive ability.

The US government has held Cuba responsible, arguing that Raul Castro's authoritarian state must have either carried out the assaults or at least known who was behind them.

Last October, the State Department ordered non-essential embassy personnel and the families of all staff to leave Havana, arguing the USA could not protect them from unexplained illnesses that have harmed at least 24 Americans. The cause of those incidents, reported in late 2016 and early 2017, still remains a mystery.

Was this a sonic attack?

Symptoms included headaches and hearing loss.
