Trump slams West Virginia GOP Senate candidate Blankenship

Once considered a long shot, Mr. Blankenship now may actually be the favorite heading into Tuesday's election, perhaps the most closely watched primary in the nation and one that Republicans see as pivotal to their chances of retaining control of the Senate. "I will beat Joe Manchin and ditch Cocaine Mitch, for the sake of the kids".

The former coal baron recently served a one-year prison sentence on a conviction for conspiring to violate mine safety laws, following the Upper Big Branch Mine explosion in 2010 that killed 29 people. He's launched a racially charged campaign against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), which has intensified GOP efforts to tank Blankenship before they fear he tanks them.

"To the great people of West Virginia we have, together, a really great chance to keep making a big difference".

Many are convinced that a Blankenship win, coming just months after the disastrous Alabama Senate race, would destroy the party's prospects of defeating Democratic Sen.

"Morrisey's trying to tear Don's house down", Andy Sere, a spokesperson for the Jenkins campaign, told ABC News. Trump concluded, referencing the two other GOP candidates on the ballot Tuesday in West Virginia: Rep. Evan Jenkins and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.

Last week, the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., sent out a similar anti-Blankenship tweet, asking "the people of West Virginia to make a wise decision and reject Blankenship". "Let's put America first, find the very best person in West Virginia and not have a situation where we can't even compete in November".

All three leading candidates in the GOP primary have tried to attach themselves to Trump by emphasizing their commitment to his agenda.

The battle over Trumpism in West Virginia underscores the difficulties confronting the national party as insurgent candidates rush to claim the president's mantle.

After that loss, Trump said on Twitter: "The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election".

State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has said fellow Republican Blankenship failed to file a personal financial disclosure form in violation of the Ethics in Government Act. Should the Mr. Blankenship however win despite the intervention it would be exceptionally uncomfortable to Mr. Trump.

Moore later lost to Democrat Doug Jones, after facing sexual misconduct allegations from almost 10 women, including accusations of child molestation.

The victor will face Sen.

That hasn't stopped Blankenship from using Trump to help his case. Outspoken conservative Moore won the primary but lost the seat to Democrat Doug Jones in December after the allegations became public.

Trump's tweet on Blankenship starkly reveals both of those character traits.
