Teen arrested after student shot at LA-area high school

The suspect, a former student at Highland High School, was taken into custody at a supermarket by an off-duty Los Angeles police officer after the boy called his father to tell him that he had fired a gun into the air, McDonnell said.

"The Los Angeles Unified School District police department reported at least 160 such threats in the nine days after the Parkland massacre, and a tip from a school resource officer led Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies to arrest a 17-year-old student at El Camino High School in Whittier that month who is accused of threatening to "shoot up" the school after a teacher took away his earphones", The Los Angeles Time wrote.

The suspect has been charged with one count of attempted murder, McDonnell said.

She says there's no information about that caller and no confirmation of the report. Student Pualani Revis told KABC-TV that students ran into her classroom saying there were gunshots going off.

Firefighter-paramedics told NBC Los Angeles they received a report of one person with a gunshot wound, though any injuries couldn't be independently confirmed.

Lydia Gilbert, a junior at Highland, said her mother was dropping her off when a student ran up and warned her there was a shooting.

"There were some kids running from the school, and security and sheriff were telling people to go home", she said.

"It's scary, I don't know what to feel", Ana Salazar told KTLA. I heard it at the other side of the school. "Thankfully we only had one child that was shot".
