Soon after Game 6, Beagle lauded the Capitals' depth.

Washington is in the Eastern Conference finals for just the third times in team history, the last being in 1997-98 when it beat the Buffalo Sabres and then lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Final. To make matters worse, Washington had been eliminated in the second round by their rival three times since 2009. The Capitals came in as Presidents' Trophy winners and got off to a convincing start on an overtime victor from T.J. Oshie in Game 1. It built as the puck that Kuznetsov tapped away from Sidney Crosby made its way to Washington teammate Alexander Ovechkin.

The Capitals have gotten the much-needed support from their secondary lines as well as their top-unit.

"It's nearly embarrassing that it's taken this long to get past it", said team owner Ted Leonsis, who bought the Capitals in 1999, one year after they last made it past the second round. In Wilson's three games on the top-line he chipped in for four assists while also setting the tone with his physicality. Holtby gave up 13 goals on 164 shots in the series to the potent Penguins.

After Tampa Bay allowed six goals in the opening game of the series against Boston, the Bruins were held to just seven more the rest of the way.

Going into this series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals were hoping for a different outcome.

The victory must have been extra sweet for Ovechkin, who had played 109 playoff games in his career without advancing past the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Penguins were unable win the Stanley Cup for the third consecutive year. Going into the 2017 NHL Playoffs, Holtby had statistically the best goaltending stats in postseason history with a.938 SV % in a minimum of 20 starts.
