Trump's tweets say "the great people of Montana will not stand for this kind of slander" and that Jackson's reputation "for no reason whatsoever. has been shattered".

A document of testimony from current and past colleagues released by Democratic lawmakers included the allegation that the White House physician once "wrecked a government vehicle" after he got drunk at a Secret Service going-away party.

The White House official, who declined to speak on the record, said the White House investigation did not find any documents to back up the allegations, and found evidence to refute two major accusations.

The Secret Service statement went on to say, "Rear Admiral Jackson, in his role as the official White House Physician, has provided years of dedicated support to the men and women of the Secret Service, often miles from home and under hard travel conditions, in order to ensure our personnel are healthy and prepared to execute our critical mission". But White House officials said it would be inconceivable for serious damage to a government vehicle to escape notice and not be recorded.

Democrats said Thursday that the allegations against Jackson reflected a lack of proper vetting by the White House.

Trump nominated Jackson to be VA secretary on March 28 after firing former VA Secretary David Shulkin.
