Serzh Sargsyan opened gateway to New Armenia with sober assessment

Armenia will elect a new prime minister next week to succeed Serzh Sarkisian, who quit on Monday after days of opposition protests.

Sargsyan's post is temporarily occupied by his deputy Karen Karapetyan, former prime minister and former senior executive of Russian gas giant Gazprom.

"We also fear that Pashinyan could make a deal with oligarchs".

Just as Serzh Sarkisian opened the gateway to New Armenia with sober assessment, all political forces, especially those enjoying the confidence of the majority of the population should lead the country along this path in a consolidated manner, guided by the Constitution. Pashinyan urged demonstrators to resume the rally, with the protesters paralyzing traffic on several major avenues and streets in Yerevan and gathering at the Republic Square again.

On April 23, Serzh Sargsyan, formerly the president who was elected as the prime minister by the parliament on April 17, resigned amid mass protests that broke out across the country on April 13.

Armenia's opposition secured another victory on Thursday as the country's parliament said it would hold a special session and new leader elections after weeks of protests and the resignation of itsprime minster.

Buying Trans Mountain pipeline outright an option: Notley
The protest comes as Canadian PM Justin Trudeau is set to meet Commonwealth Heads of Government. If Albertans want to buy themselves a pipeline that may or may not be built, that's up to them.

Pashinyan accuses authorities of wanting to nominate a Republican Party candidate for prime minister and has warned that the opposition could boycott snap parliamentary elections.

"The people have already shown their force", she said.

But an end to the political crisis was nowhere in sight, with the protest leader lacking enough votes to get elected in a parliament still controlled by the ruling Republican Party.

Protest leader Pashinyan, a former journalist turned lawmaker who has been instrumental in organising the protests, has said he is ready to become prime minister.

"Armenia is starting a new chapter in its history", Armenian President Armen Sarkissian said in a statement.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Armenian counterpart Eduard Nalbandyan while Kremlin officials also held talks with the country's acting Vice Premier Armen Gevorkyan.
