Scott Pruitt needs to be fired from the EPA

As mounting reports and accusations of unethical spending continue to plague Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt, Oklahoma's Senators are continuing their full-throated support of the embattled former Attorney General.

The pointed letter from David Apol, the acting director and general counsel of the Office of Government Ethics, summarizes reports of Pruitt's conduct, including a rental agreement with a lobbyist whose husband's firm lobbies the EPA as well as EPA spending on Pruitt's travel and security. Apol said the EPA needed to "take action to appropriately address any violations".

CNN has reached out to the EPA for comment.

Trump also defended Pruitt in a tweet on Saturday, saying the secretary has "received death threats because of his bold actions at EPA".

The blizzard of ethical questions surrounding Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has become a Category 5 storm.

The Carper-Whitehouse letter cites a memo from William Stull, special agent on Pruitt's private security detail, to Nino Perrotta, the detail's special agent in charge, which summarizes available threat information and shows 16 threats directed against Pruitt.

Apol additionally says that statements from company ethics officers that Pruitt's residing state of affairs didn't violate reward guidelines may now be in query given new details about the association.

He sent it to the EPA on Friday. The president did not acknowledge Pruitt while reporters were present or address the ethical cloud swirling around his EPA chief.

And it reports that at least five agency officials faced retaliation after questioning Pruitt's outsized spending for travel, unprecedented security precautions and pricey office furniture.

Inhofe was one of Pruitt's more vocal supporters prior to his confirmation. Pruitt has been accused of using an obscure provision in the Safe Drinking Water Act to give two loyal aides huge salary increases, after being turned down to authorize more money by the White House. They included Pruitt's discounted housing rental arrangement with an energy lobbyist and his use of first-class flights for official EPA trips. There also are ongoing investigations into his outsized travel spending and purchase of a $43,000 soundproof phone booth. "Rent was about market rate, travel expenses OK". Perrotta oversaw a rapid expansion of the EPA chief's security detail to accommodate guarding him day and night, even on family vacations and when Pruitt was home in Oklahoma. Pruitt exclusively paid for nights that he slept on the apartment and has referred to as it an "Airbnb" model association, however exterior ethics specialists have mentioned it may elevate additional questions if the homeowners held the room open for him even when he did not pay.

Already, a number of Pruitt's rollbacks have been overturned in federal court on the basis of insufficient justification.

"They run the variety of direct death threats - "I'm going to put a bullet in your brain" - to implied threats - 'if you don't classify this particular chemical in this particular way, I'm going to hurt you, '" assistant inspector general Patrick Sullivan told CNN. Wilcox doubled down on that assertion Tuesday, but did not immediately respond to a request from AP to release details of the specific incidents to which he was referring.
