Saudi Arabia intercepted 'Houthi missile' over Riyadh

Saudi Arabia's air defense forces said that they intercepted Houthi scout drone over Abha airport on the same day that militias fired a ballistic missile targeting the capital Riyadh. The location may have been selected by the kingdom to avoid Houthi missile strikes during Sunday's summit.

Three loud blasts were heard and three clouds of smoke could be seen in the sky above central Riyadh, according to witnesses.

Saudi Arabia's missile interceptions came hours after Saudi air defences shot down two unmanned Yemeni drones in southern Saudi Arabia.

. Saudi officials have not yet commented on the report.

Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of backing the Houthis, a charge Iran has denied.

The facility reportedly belonged to the oil giant Saudi Aramco.

"The missile force carried out a large-scale ballistic missile attack on various parts of Saudi Arabia", Al Masirah said.

The Houthis previous year unveiled the Qasef-1 drone, along with three other new types of drones used for surveillance and attack, claiming they were indigenously made.

The Iran-aligned Yemeni rebels, who have been fighting a Saudi-led Arab coalition in Yemen since 2015, said that they targeted on Wednesday morning local time the Abha airport in Asir and Aramco in Jazan, according to the Houthis' Al-Masirah outlet.

Last month the Saudi army intercepted seven missiles over Riyadh launched by the rebels.
