No charges to be filed in Prince's death

Prosecutors in the Minnesota county where Prince died will announce a decision Thursday (April 17) on criminal charges following a two-year investigation into the musician's death from an accidental fentanyl overdose.

Fentanyl is a powerful painkiller - which is being blamed the the nationwide Opioids epidemic.

Among the collection are numerous icon's unique outfits - including a blue turtleneck and trousers, which he wore during his 1999 party at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota and is expected to fetch around £35,000 to £50,000.

"Prince's death is a tragic example that opioid addiction and overdose deaths do not discriminate, no matter the demographic,"Carver County Attorney Mark Metz said at a press conference Thursday". Because Prince was concerned about his privacy, Johnson asked Schulenberg to issue a prescription for painkillers in Johnson's name. They also showed Schulenberg and Kirk Johnson, who was Prince's close friend and bodyguard, were the main subjects of the investigation.

Search warrants a year ago revealed that prescription drugs were found all over Prince's house, some of them in the name of a confidant who claimed that he hadn't known that Prince was addicted to pain pills. "In all likelihood Prince had no idea he was taking a counterfeit pill that could kill him".

"Nothing at all the data suggests Prince intentionally redeemed fentanyl", Metz said, adding that there wasldquo;no signs which a health care provider prescribed the pills which murdered Prince. "In addition, there is no evidence that any person associated with Prince knew Prince possessed any counterfeit pills containing fentanyl".

Prince died of a fentanyl overdose, not oxycodone.

In a statement provided to ABC News, Schulenberg's attorney says his client agreed to settle "alleged civil claims in order to avoid the expense, delay, and unknown outcome of litigation". "Without probable cause, and no identifiable suspect, the Carver County Attorney's Office can not file criminal charges involving the death of Prince".

WCCO's Mary McGuire spoke with one longtime fan before the announcement on charges was made this morning.

But the federal government alleges that Dr. Michael Todd Schulenberg violated the Controlled Substances Act when he wrote a prescription in someone else's name on April 14, 2016. The official cause of death was ruled to be a self-administered overdose.

Prince's death at 57 sparked a national outpouring of grief, as well as a joint county and federal investigation.
