Marines feared dead in military chopper crash

A Marine Corps helicopter crashed in Imperial County and the entire crew is presumed dead.

The Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing crashed around 20 miles north of the U.S. -Mexico border at approximately 2:35 p.m. local time on April 3.

Four US marines are believed to have been killed in a helicopter crash in southern California. "My office will be closely following the Marine Corps investigation as they look into the details of this tragic crash".

On Tuesday, a CH-53E Super Stallion crashed in El Centro, Calif., killing all four people on board. None of its seven crew members or local residents was hurt, but the Japanese Defense Ministry's local bureau said the accident site was found to have been about 300 meters away from residential houses.

El Centro is located in southeastern California, near the Mexican border.

In a statement, the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing said it will wait 24 hours after families are informed before the victims' names are released to the media. It is primarily used for used for minesweeping and transportation of cargo. During that incident, none of the seven USA military personnel were injured nor were any residents harmed, the Asahi Shimbun, one of the five national newspapers in Japan, reported.

The CH-53E Super Stallion is the largest helicopter in the USA military.

Other crashes involving CH-53E helicopters include an incident last October in Okinawa, but there were no injuries, the AP reported.
