Amazon now delivers packages to parked cars in 37 cities, including Pittsburgh

Amazon Key doesn't work because we have a gate, and I find it a little daunting to let unknown delivery people into our house.

Using Amazon Key, customers can now request in-car delivery.

Inc. this morning launched Key In-Car, a novel package delivery option that it hopes will make online shopping even more convenient than it is now.

The in-car service launched Tuesday in 37 cities around the country and is now compatible with any 2015 or newer connected Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac or Volvo vehicle for free to Amazon's 100 million Prime members.

When you order something from Amazon, In-Car delivery pops up as one of the options.

Reportedly rolling out to 37 cities, the service works via the Amazon Key app and supports most 2015 or newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and Volvo vehicles with a connected-car service plan such as OnStar or Volvo On Call. Amazon says it hopes to add other vehicle brands in the future.

Following early-access testing through select customers, the tech and e-tail giant has rolled out Key In-Car, which essentially turns the trunk of your car into a mailbox where couriers can directly deliver packages. On delivery day, Amazon gives customers a four-hour delivery window and directs couriers to the parked vehicle, which is unlocked following an encrypted authentication process. While we suppose this is convenient, there is also the question of whether or not you want your packages to be in full display inside your vehicle, which could prompt thieves to smash your windows and make off with it, but we suppose to each their own.

Once the driver is standing next to the vehicle, they tap on the app and it opens the locks.

Amazon said Tuesday that, through its Prime Now program, Whole Foods customers in Denver, Sacramento and San Diego can now get free two-hour delivery of natural and organic products.

The app-based service, which lets auto owners provide delivery agents with keyless access to trunks, is an example of how Amazon is exploring new methods of delivering goods to customers. First, Amazon's drivers have access to your auto and not your home. Once this process is successfully completed, the auto is then unlocked.

One can get the package without having to be present or signing for anything, they'd simply find it in the trunk of their auto.

Customers receive a notification via the Amazon Key App when the delivery is on its way and after the delivery is completed and the vehicle is relocked.

Head to Amazon's In-Car delivery page for more information or to sign up. And as with in-home delivery, shoppers may be concerned about letting a stranger into their vehicle.
