7 killed, scores wounded by Israeli fire in Gaza protest

Israel has faced mounting questions over its use of live fire after 10 days of protests along the Gaza Strip border in which its forces have killed 30 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry.

A Palestinian journalist has died after being shot by Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip.

Violence spiked again on Friday, when clashes erupted as thousands protested along the border, and nine innocent Palestinians, including a journalist, were killed.

Yasser Murtaja died from a gunshot wound he sustained while filming Friday in an area engulfed in thick black smoke from protesters setting tires on fire. Journalists were targeted despite wearing flak jackets marked with press identification.

Rights groups have harshly criticised Israeli soldiers' actions, saying they are shooting at Palestinian protesters who pose no security threat.

Washington was the only member of the 15-member Security Council to reject the statement condemning Israel's response to the "March for Return" demonstrations.

They said the demonstrators, including two boys aged 16 and 17, were killed at protest sites along the frontier during a round of daily demonstrations that has been dubbed "The Great March of Return".

Also in Australia, almost 1,000 demonstrators joined a protest rally in Melbourn dubbed "Free Palestine" to censure Israeli regime's brutal violence - including live fire - used against Palestinian protesters in occupied territories in recent days.

Israel captured Gaza, a skinny strip of land alongside the Mediterranean coast, from Egypt within the 1967 Mideast battle and occupied the world for nearly 4 a long time earlier than withdrawing all troops and settlements in 2005.

For Hamas, it's perhaps the last chance to break a border blockade enforced by Israel and Egypt since 2007, without having to succumb to demands that it disarm.

The Palestinian journalist syndicate asserted that at least seven other reporters were also injured during the firing by Israelis in Friday's protest. "The target was very clearly journalists", he said.

Iyad al-Dawahidi is taken to al-Shifa hospital for treatment after he was shot by Israeli occupation forces during protests at the Israel-Gaza boundary, 6 April.

Israel said around 20,000 people took part in the protests and that they were seeking to breach the border. It says it's investigating the circumstances of Murtaja's death.

Unemployment is approaching 50 p.c, in line with official Palestinian figures.

The protests are planned to last six weeks up until Nakhba Day, the anniversary of Israel's establishment that displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

However worldwide organizations just like the World Financial institution and United Nations say the blockade continues to stifle the economic system.

Blaming the protesters "of trying to storm into Israel", the IDF deployed both live fire and tear gas at the protesters, while fire trucks sprayed water at the burning tyres on the other side of the border.
