US issues travel warning for Playa Del Carmen

"According to Government of Mexico statistics, the state experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to the same period in 2016", the warning for Quintana Roo states. The explosion injured more than 20 individuals, including tourists.

Some tourist destinations have no warnings against them, including Mexico City, Cancun, and Los Cabos. The AP also reported that undetonated explosive devices were found last week on another vessel owned by the same ferry company.

Responding to the alert, the local governor's office said USA visitors remain welcome in the state of Quintana Roo and Mexico as a whole. Playa del Carmen's beaches and resorts have typically been a huge attraction for spring break travelers from the United States.

According to the advisory, Canadians are advised to exercise a high degree of caution when visiting all parts of Mexico "due to high levels of criminal activity, as well as demonstrations, protests and occasional illegal roadblocks".
