Tributes to Roger Bannister, who has died at age 88

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "Sir Roger Bannister was more than simply one of the greatest athletes of all time - by breaking the four-minute mile he redefined what was thought impossible, and inspired the world".

So on May 6, 1954, when the public address man announced Bannister's time with a dramatic pause the crowd of 3,000 at Iffley Road Track in Oxford, England drowned out the rest of the announcement with a roar.

Bannister's 3:59:4 stood as the record for less than two months, until Australian John Landy ran a mile in 3:57.9 in Finland.

The two men competed at the Commonwealth Games in Canada later in 1954 in a race billed as the "Miracle Mile".

He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2011.

"He banked his treasure in the hearts of his friends", they added, in a statement published by the Press Association news agency. No woman has ever run the mile in less than four minutes. "Sir Roger Bannister showed that barriers are there to be broken and there are no limits".

Prime Minister Theresa May tweeted: "Sir Roger Bannister was a great British sporting icon whose achievements were an inspiration to us all".

But Bannister's achievement has continued to inspire athletics enthusiasts, with the shoes he wore to break the four-minute barrier selling for a record.

"None of my athletics was the greatest achievement", he once said. He was knighted in 1975 for his service as the first Chairman of Britain's Sports Council, according to The Telegraph.

He entered the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki as the United Kingdom record-holder in the mile, finishing a disappointing fourth in the 1,500-meter run. "The first person you're taught to look up to is Roger Bannister".

"The world's best runners had been attempting the 4-minute barrier for a quarter of a century".

Australian Landy led for most of the race but Bannister passed him on the final bend and won the race by almost a second, both men going under four minutes and Bannister running a career-best 3:58.8.

"At the age of 88 he was still an active supporter of the University and we will miss him enormously".

In 1955, he married Moyra Jacobsson, an artist.

Bannister also served as master of Oxford's Pembroke College from 1985-93.
