Shoes protest for child gun victims

Advocates for gun control laid out 7,000 pairs of shoes on the Capitol lawn in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to memorialize the 7,000 children killed by gun violence in the USA since the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

A press release published by Avaaz said the 7,000 shoes will help keep national attention on gun control as the March 24 protest approaches.

The group receives most of its funding from donations from victims, celebrities, and other donors.

The tribute follows nationwide outcry over the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida last month, where former student Nikolas Cruz, 19, killed 17 people with an AR-15 assault rifle.

Although there was no link to any figures or date, Avaaz said the study found that guns kill an average of "1,300 American kids a year".

The protest, called the Monument For Our Kids, was organized by Avaaz, an organization of activists who focus on improving lives across the globe through advocacy and social movements.

The father of a child killed in the Columbine shooting brought the shoes of his deceased son to place at the Capitol.

In addition, he demanded that the ruling TRS give Rajya Sabha ticket to a family member of Telangana martyrs. Mamata agreed with Rao's opinion that there is a necessity for qualitative change in the country's politics.

The Capitol Hill display is not the first time Avaaz has used shoes to make a political statement.

To arrive at that figure, the group cited a 2017 report from the American Academy of Pediatrics using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found almost 1,300 children die from gunshot wounds in the U.S. every year.

It was a odd, eerie sight on the U.S. Capitol lawn today.

The 7,000 pairs of shoes were collected from multiple locations around the DC area. Each pair represents a child who has been killed by gun violence in the US since the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Mauser lost his son Daniel in the Columbine school massacre 19 years ago.

The push for gun control has had mixed results.
