Phillies 'looming' as favorite to sign RHP Jake Arrieta

Bob Nightengale of USA Today says that free agent right-hander Jake Arrieta is expected to sign with a team "in the next couple of days". The former Cy Young victor goes to Philadelphia, who have quietly spent a lot of money this winter.

The Phillies current rotation has potential, with the 24-year-old Aaron Nola on staff, but outside of Nola the rest of Philadelphia's rotation lacks proven arms. Arrieta, 32, had a strong second half of 2017 leading into free agency as he compiled a 2.28 ERA following the All-Star break.

Arrieta went 14-10 across 30 starts last season while recording a 3.53 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 168 1/3 innings.

The Padres, Nationals and Phillies have all been connected to Arrieta over the last month or so, but no concrete offers seem to have materialized lately. Arrieta has also produced two no-hitters and a career.222 batting average against him. Despite all of that, however, there is no denying that the signing of Jake Arrieta will immediately elevate the Phillies within their division. If their young starters can take step forward this season, the Phillies could make waves in the wild card standings. The Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins are in the midst of massive rebuilds, and the New York Mets are a fringe team at best.

"He came here to be a Cub, and he did that, and he ascended to a Cy Young and everything else - three years of playoffs". Should Arrieta return to his 2015 or 2016 form then the he will undoubtedly become the biggest steal of the offseason.
