Czech Snowboarder Makes Olympic History with Gold in Skiing and Snowboarding

Gold medallist Ester Ledecka of the Czech Republic celebrates during the victory ceremony for the Alpine Skiing Ladies Super-G at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games on February 17, 2018.

The 22-year-old celebrated her Olympic gold medals in Alpine super-G and parallel slalom snowboarding with a riotous 50-minute media conference on Sunday.

This Saturday's win came nearly a week after Ledecka stunned a strong field including defending champion Anna Veith and American Lindsey Vonn to win the super-G, which already made her one of the big stories of these Games.

Still struggling to take in the enormity of her achievement, Ledecka admitted she had been overwhelmed by the interest levels generated in her audacious bid to win gold in two sports.

"I felt it was a mistake", she said afterward.

Last Saturday, Ledecka shocked the world by winning her alpine ski race, the Super G, beating out sixth-place finisher Lindsey Vonn, among others.

The Czech admitted it had been hard to adjust to her primary sport after the whirlwind that followed last week's triumph on skis. She spoke of the jaw-dropping lines that Ledecka carves on Alpine courses, a knack that Ledecka's snowboarding coach, Reiter, attributes to her experience maneuvering on a snowboard, which, because it has no steadying or stabilizing poles, requires seeing a mountain in a more imaginative way.

"But as long as I'm on the hill, I feel like it's home and I feel very good".

Met Éireann warn of 'exceptionally cold weather' next week
It's as if someone opened the freezer door in North America's kitchen, and let all the cold air drain out toward the midlatitudes. Its forecast added snow showers will continue in the east and southeast on Sunday before becoming "more widespread on Monday".

NY made a big splash by acquiring power-hitter Giancarlo Stanton , while the Red Sox basically just changed their coaching staff. ESPN's Buster Olney said Monday morning that he believes the two sides will come to an agreement soon.

"My plan is to stay with my heart, so for now, I think I will do both because I love both and I love to do this", she added. "It was so nice", an ecstatic Ledecka said after claiming gold at the podium, via the official website of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Nobody could get close to Ester Ledecka on this slope.

Justin Reiter, the snowboard coach who came on board this season after ending his own career, said he learned pretty early on not to try and stifle Ledecka's ambition.

Ledecka revealed that it felt unusual to go back-and-forth between the snowboard and skis.

"I feel that one of my biggest advantages is that I'm having fun with what I'm doing", she said fingering a Native American feather threaded into her hair. Everyone was screaming. I thought, "OK, now it's weird".

"But each time we get Ester back on the snowboard side, it's like chunk of coal". When she looked up at the scoreboard and saw the time, she froze.

She did the same after winning gold in the parallel giant slalom.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING: Iivo Niskanen beat out Russian rival Alexander Bolshunov with a strong sprint in the 50-kilometer mass start to give Finland its first gold. Nobody should be too surprised that she took another gold medal, either.
