Two dead, hundreds injured after U.S. trains collide

Authorities said the Amtrak train that crashed in South Carolina Sunday was on the wrong track when it rammed a parked CSX freight train, killing two and injuring more than 100.

The injured were taken to hospitals in the region for treatment.

The two victims were later identified as Amtrak personnel. "CSX maintains all of the tracks and signal systems", the company said.

The Amtrak train was traveling from NY to Miami when it crashed into that freight train in Cayce, South Carolina.

As daylight broke, the crash scene revealed a tangle of crushed freight cars and part of the Amtrak train lying on its side.

According to police, several thousand gallons of fuel spilled as a result of the crash.

"It's a awful thing to see, to understand the force involved", the governor said after touring the scene.
