Trump administration wants to replace food stamps with at-home food delivery

"The section in the president's 2019 budget entitled 'Reforming the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)' certainly makes major changes, but not changes that SNAP-authorized food retailers see as positive or even efficient", said Jennifer Hatcher, chief public policy officer at Arlington, Va. -based Food Marketing Institute (FMI).

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney compared the program to Blue Apron, an ingredient-and-recipe meal kit service.

It's sure to be a sure money saver for the government as the box of food would be valued at about half the price of monthly food stamp benefits.

A proposal to overhaul how food stamps are distributed in America involves packaged food deliveries. He received electronic benefits each month on a card.

Rather than letting people on food stamps choose their own groceries, the Trump administration is proposing sending out more than 16.4 million boxes of basic food supplies every month as part of its new proposed federal budget - and will force states to cover the cost of distribution.

Unlike Blue Apron, which includes meat and produce, the food delivery box would include only shelf-stable foods like canned goods, rice and pasta, and other processed foods.

Amazon, Inc. (AMZN) Tops Earnings Expectations After Hours
Compared to the same quarter in 2016, AWS saw a hike in revenue of 45%, thoroughly trouncing the $3.5bn it made a year earlier. Not for nothing is the company earning infamy for squeezing competitors by running on low profit margins.

Kyle Waide, the CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, vehemently disagreed with that assessment. The group pointed to recent research showing that SNAP is of critical importance in reducing food and economic insecurity, fighting poverty and improving the nation's health and well-being. No fresh fruits or vegetables would be included.

The amount of boxed food received per household would be scaled to the overall size of the household's SNAP allotment, ultimately representing about half of their benefits. The volunteers were busy, but say they're anxious about proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said the plan was innovative and bold, highlighting that the food in the packages would be grown by American farmers.

"Despite significant economic improvements and a strong recovery in the job market, enrollment in welfare programs remains stubbornly high in many places around the Nation", President Trump stated to Congress.

The proposal at hand was tucked deep within the Trump administration's 2019 budget request released Monday.

Knott also said that the program is created to help vulnerable populations like veterans returning from combat or seasonal workers who would lose benefits if they aren't working for several months. Congressman Steve Cohen said the proposed changes to the SNAP program are both impractical and cruel.
