Designated 2018 CB, the asteroid is an estimated 50 feet to 130 feet in size, possibly bigger than the one that exploded over Russian Federation five years ago this month. The rock exploded in the atmosphere 14.5 miles (23.3 kilometers) above Russia's Chelyabinsk region in February 2013.

Paul Chodas of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, told The Guardian that asteroids of this size don't often come close to our planet. It caused over 1,000 injuries and extensive damage to property. It was estimated at 50 to 100 feet in size, JPL said.

The asteroid is now known as 2018 CB, and its closest approach comes on the heels of another asteroid flyby, which occurred Tuesday at 12:10 p.m.
