Special Counsel Mueller Unveils New Indictment in Russia Probe

The law firm's work was being investigated by Ukraine's top prosecutor, which asked the Department of Justice for help in questioning eight lawyers who the Ukrainians believed were involved, including van der Zwaan, according to documents reviewed by The New York Times.

Amid an investigation that's been ongoing for the better part of a year, on February 16, the first Russian charges were brought in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into meddling in the 2016 election.

The only details the American prosecutors gave about Person A.'s identity is that the person was a long time business associate of Manafort and spoke to Van der Zwaan in Russian, according to the Washington Post.

Van der Zwaan worked in the London office of worldwide law office Skadden, Arps, Slate Meagher and Flom for 10 years.

Its inclusion in a binder in the court clerk's office that is routinely updated with new criminal charges signals that Mueller's office may have filed a superseding indictment replacing a previous one from a year ago against the two men.

It underscores - once again - that Mueller's team has been willing to prosecute any individual who has been found lying or omitting the truth in the ongoing criminal investigation. Manafort and Gates pleaded not guilty to the charges.

But legal experts said the charge would put more pressure on the former Trump aides to cooperate with Mueller as he looks into whether Russian Federation tried to influence the election in favor of Trump by hacking the emails of leading Democrats and distributing disinformation and propaganda online.

"No, I'm not", the president said in mid-December.

According to Mueller, the defendant prepared for the Ukrainian Justice Ministry in 2012 under the Yanukovych government, a report on the "legitimacy" of the legal cases against Tymoshenko, who was sentenced in 2011 to seven years in prison for abuse of power and corruption, though she was released in February 2014.

New charging documents against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort were filed Wednesday.

Manafort was indicted in October over allegations that he laundered tens of millions of dollars earned from his work in Ukraine into the United States. Parts of Steele's work were also used in obtaining a secret warrant to monitor Carter Page, a former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser.

The report's credibility has been attacked by former USA ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst, who told the New York Times (paywall) the report was "a nasty piece of work" and that Skadden "should have been ashamed of it".

Gates and Manafort are also charged with acting as "unregistered agents" of the former pro-Russian president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, as well as his party.

The report was authored by the law firm, Skadden, Arps. The case is being overseen by U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who is also overseeing Mueller's cases against former Trump campaign aides Paul Manafort and Rick Gates. Some reports say he is expected to enter a guilty plea.
