BMW X4 gets official rocking improved aero and improved suspension

The new X4 is being pitched as a more premium auto the starting price increased by some £4,000-plus over the outgoing vehicle.

There's an oversized 10.25-inch touchscreen, optional head-up display (now 75 percent larger), and both gesture- and voice-control functionality. Naturally, the six-cylinder x30d is the quicker of the diesels, with a 0-62mph time of 5.8 seconds, but the x20d (which can hit 62mph in 8.0 seconds) is more economical, with claimed economy of up to 52.3mpg and Carbon dioxide emissions as low as 142g/km. The petrol engines for the X4 will come with the following specifications.

Two powertrains will be offered in the US. For the ultimate in personalisation, items from the BMW Individual range are also available, including metallic paints and wheels up to 21 inches in diameter.

Prices for the latest X4 start from £42,900 - an increase of more than £4000 on the outgoing auto.

BMW M Performance models will follow soon after and will include an M40d powered by a 326bhp 3.0-litre diesel. Rear legroom has grown by 27mm, while the boot capacity is up to 525 litres - 25 litres more than in the current vehicle.

BMW has only released pricing information for the entry-level X4 20d (£42,900) and M40d (£55,315), but more specs and prices will revealed in full when the X4 makes its worldwide debut at the Geneva Motor Show on 8 - 18 March.

Whether or not you agree with BMW's "sports activity coupe" nomenclature, the truth is, weirdo swoopy crossovers are a hit around the globe. 19-inch and 20-inch wheels are on offer, with the latter shod in 245/45 front and 275/40 rear tyres. Driver assist systems include blind spot detection, lane departure warning, daytime pedestrian protection, frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation, rear cross traffic alert for the rear and speed limit information.

That theme continues on the inside where you'll find the latest generation of BMW's excellent iDrive infotainment system. Driver assistance features and connectivity technologies have been improved. A SIM card comes as standard, which allows the use of BMW Teleservices in the event of an emergency - with an automatic prompt if a low-speed collision is detected. Add the optional "Driving Assistant Plus" safety pack and the X4 will benefit from active steering systems that can keep the vehicle in lane at up to 130mph, along with various cross-traffic and cross-wind warning systems.
