Attacks out of proportion: Oxfam chief

Reports that Oxfam staff members sexually exploited people in crisis zones are "a stain" that shames the charity, the organisation's chief said in an interview broadcast Friday.

"From the bottom of my heart I am asking for forgiveness", she added.

I am inviting anyone who has been a victim of abuse to come forward.

"We need to make sure anyone guilty of such gross misconduct is not able to move between different organisations, exposing more vulnerable people to risk", said Byanyima.

"Oxfam will be a standard bearer of safety and dignity for all who interact with us", she said on twitter.

Oxfam CEO Mark Goldring said the organization is working to protect staff, volunteers and communities around the world.

Eavis, daughter of Glastonbury founder and co-organiser Michael Eavis, said they had been "horrified at the reports in the news" but had been assured by the charity they were taking action "to ensure a vigorous safeguarding plan for the future".

"We are going to create a vetting system", Winnie Byanyima, executive director of Oxfam International, told the BBC.

Mark Goldring, the Chief Executive of Oxfam, has lambasted the intensity of the criticism levied against his organisation over claims that its workers used prostitutes in Haiti.

Eight years later activists in Haiti have learnt that Oxfam - the charity they considered an ally in their cause - was run by men who may have committed similar abuses.

"I struggle to understand why they didn't respond immediately to that call for additional resource", she said.

Mark Goldring, the chief executive, said that critics were "gunning" for Oxfam and that the criticism was out of proportion after revelations that senior staff has paid sex workers in Haiti following the devastating 2010 natural disaster.

"I think that these people should be considered persona non grata", she said of the charity, which spent $15 million on its operations in the country past year and employs 248 staff.

The deputy head of Oxfam resigned on Monday over what she said was the British charity's failure to adequately respond to past allegations of sexual misconduct by some of its staff in Haiti and Chad.

Reforms announced on Friday include more than doubling the number of people working in Oxfam's safeguarding processes while more than tripling the annual funding to £720,000.

The prostitution allegations were not passed to Haitian authorities at the time of the inquiry, but Oxfam said it had now passed on the names of the men involved.
