Intel says new patches coming soon for CPU flaws

Once that testing wraps up, the update will be made available for everyone.

Intel on Monday told hardware makers and end users to stop deploying its firmware patch for Spectre CPU attack due to it causing "higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior".

The company published a full list of Intel-based platforms that are impacted by this problem, and it's quite long.

Well, not exactly. You see, it turns out the patch that was issued by Intel has a few problems of its own.

"We have now identified the root cause for Broadwell and Haswell platforms, and made good progress in developing a solution to address it".

Port Richey Police Chief Gerard DeCanio said the shuttle boat experienced engine problems after leaving the dock at Port Richey. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office says all of the passengers were able to make it back to shore where EMS crews treated them.

In new guidance detailing affected desktop, mobile and server chips, Intel says it's creating an option for OEMs to use an old patch that doesn't cause reboots but removes the mitigation for Variant 2 of the Spectre attack.

This unfortunate development came to light Monday, when Intel issued an official statement telling a groups of its customers to just slow their roll when it comes to updating their critically vulnerable systems.

In a blog post, Intel said new patches for Broadwell and Haswell-based computers - chips that are two generations removed from the current Skylake design - are being tested by "industry partners", which nearly assuredly includes the Big Three cloud computing providers in Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google. Intel has asked its partners to focus on testing early versions of the updated fix so it can accelerate the release.

It's still not clear what the long-term implications of Meltdown and Spectre are for users running systems older than Kaby Lake or Skylake, and the state of communication around these various patches hasn't helped.

Navin Shenoy, Intel's vice president of data centres, apologised for the the disruption and advised all users to stop applying the current patches. Intel says they were "working around the clock to ensure we are addressing these issues".
