Facebook selfie solves murder case, accused Canadian woman convicted

The selfie showed Antoine wearing a belt that was later found near 18-year-old Gargol's body which was left near a landfill in Saskatchewan, Canada. Officers later received a tip that the brunette had drunkenly confessed to the killing.

The 18-year-old's body was found off Cedar Villa Estates Road, just southwest of Saskatoon, on March 25, 2015.

Another friend told police Antoine came to his house that night "hysterical" and crying about her friend, who she killed after they got into an argument. Prosecutors said the belt was found at the crime scene, and they believe Antoine killed her friend with it. Haven't heard from you.

To cover up suspicion, Antoine posted on Gargol's Facebook page the following morning - "Where are you?" The police did not realize until later that Antoine had purposely left the messages to mislead the police, while her alibi was false and the story about a odd man was concocted as a diversion. "I miss her so much". "Looking forward to that day I see you again. It shouldn't have ever happened", she said.

About six hours before the killing, Antoine posted the picture of herself wearing the same belt, according to the outlet. In the picture, Antoine is wearing the belt that was used to murder her friends.

Cheyenne Antoine was already in jail for an unrelated offense when the police arrested her for the murder of Brittney Gargol.

Police eventually used the pair's postings on social media to reconstruct the events of Gargol's final night.

Antoine then accepted responsibility for her best friend's death but claimed that she did not remember killing her.

She will now serve seven years in prison. Instead, Antoine pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges and faces a 7 year sentence.

"She knows the family would like an explanation, a reason, but unfortunately she can not provide that", her lawyer, Lisa Watson, told the court.

Antoine was born to parents who both went to residential schools, and became a ward of the province at the age of two. A year later, her mother died and Antoine began bouncing between institutions, group homes and other relatives' homes.

She was said to have had trouble with drugs and alcohol and it was alleged triggered by sexual abuse she faced at home at the hands of her foster father.

Ritter agreed with the defense that Antoine has serious personal issues. She "has issues...and because of those issues she is unsafe", the CBC reported. She was reported missing in August 2016 to Saskatoon police officials, who sought information on her whereabouts on Facebook. She couldn't remember what they were even arguing about.

"She knows the family would like an explanation, a reason, but unfortunately, she can't provide that", Watson said. Before Antoine was sentenced, Gargol's aunt gave a victim impact statement to the court.
