Bawana cracker factory fire kills 17 workers

Thirteen workers were killed in November 2016 in New Delhi after a makeshift factory was gutted in a fire. According to a Delhi fire department officials, the fire started from a firecracker factory which has a rubber factory atop it on the second storey.

Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manoj Tiwari and Leader of Opposition in Delhi assembly Vijender Gupta and North Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Preety Agarwal also reached the spot.

The bodies are kept at the mortuary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital while the two injured people, including 40-year-old Sunita Devi, are admitted to Maharshi Valmiki hospital. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives.

"Prima facie it appears packaging of the fire crackers were going on, but no machines have been found", he said.

The incident took place at F-90 in northwest Delhi's Bawana area. "Several casualties reported. Monitoring the situation.Ordered enquiry", Delhi minister Satyendar Jain said in a tweet.

"Saddened at the loss of 17 lives in the Bawana cracker factory fire. May those who are injured recover quickly", the Prime Minister's Office tweeted quoting Modi. PTI reported an injured labourer told police that the firecrackers were brought from outside and packed at the factory.

The victims were trapped in the basement, first and second floors when the fire spread from the basement to the floors above, the police officer said. Fire officials say that they were trapped, due to the lack of an exit route.

She said she saw a dead body in the front yard as she walked out, and asked the troops who it was, but wasn't given an answer. Two border policemen were injured in the gun battle, with one listed in serious/stable condition.
