Van Dijk arrival boosts Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has defended the world-record fee Liverpool are set to pay for Virgil van Dijk.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has insisted the sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool will be positive for the club.

So according to Warnock, Liverpool have signed themselves a fantastic ball-playing defender but, if reliability at the back was what Klopp was after, he should have brought in a Bamba.

"That is what Van Dijk has to do, take Liverpool to trophies and be Liverpool's No. 1 centre-back for the next decade or so".

Leicester visit Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday, with Van Dijk officially joining the Merseyside club when the transfer window opens on January 1.

Nearly time for the Geminid Meteor Shower

"I would like to bring in a couple of players minimum and we have to work for this", Pellegrino said Thursday.

Puyol is widely regarded as one of the finest defenders of the modern era following a career-spanning stint with Barca that yielded a host of honours, including six LaLiga crowns and three Champions League titles. At the beginning of the season it is hard for him because he wants to join another club, but now he will find his level. "I suggested we buy him for £6 million at the time and the chief scout said he wasn't quick enough and didn't see him stepping up [from the Scottish league] to the level we were looking for", Warnock added. "I am surprised about the development in the last two years".

Puel, whose side will be bidding to end a four-game run without a win at Anfield, praised Liverpool as "a great team with good defenders, midfield and attacking players". They are a complete team.

"We had good opportunities and good results recently against big teams like against Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham".
