UNSC: US vetoes resolution against recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital

The US vetoed a Security Council resolution on Jerusalem which called on all states to refrain from establishing embassies in the city on Monday.

Explaining the negative vote, US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley said it had been done to protect her country's sovereignty and its right to choose where to have its embassy.

Erdogan has taken a leading position in opposing the USA move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, hosting representatives from more than 50 Muslim countries, including US allies, in Istanbul last week for a summit in response.

Russian Federation is offering to play the role of an "honest moderator" in the Israel-Palestine conflict after the USA vetoed a UN Security Council resolution, which was supported by 14 nations of the 15-member body. It affirmed "that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council".

"The United States will not be told by any country where we can put our embassy", Haley told the council after the veto.

Following the U.S. veto, Egypt's Foreign Ministry said Arab states, which had agreed earlier this month to seek a Security Council resolution, would meet to evaluate the situation to determine what their next steps might be.

After the vote, Haley lashed out at the other members of the Council, calling the proceedings "an insult" that "won't be forgotten".

Trump's December 6 announcement that he would recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the American embassy there from Tel Aviv has faced heavy global criticism.

Nine votes in favour plus the support of all five veto-wielding members of the council were needed to pass the resolution.

Mueller's charging documents state bluntly that Flynn interfered with the FBI's inquiry into Trump-Russia collusion. Flynn is the first Trump White House official to be charged with a crime in connection to Mueller's investigation.

"Thank you, Ambassador Haley", he posted on his official Twitter account.

"We commend President Trump for his efforts and energy in that direction, and we call on the USA administration to put forward concrete details, proposals as soon as possible to take that process forward". "Thank you, Nikki Haley".

"It is in line with previous Security Council resolutions, and we call on all parties to renew efforts in favour of a long and sustained and a sustainable peace in the Middle East".

The Palestinian delegation to the UN?are now instead seeking a vote in the 193-member General Assembly on the USA decision on Jerusalem.

In the fairy tale, can't-we-all-get-along world Mr. Weinstein inhabits, supporting or voting on fancy-sounding proposals is all it takes to make himself feel like a good guy and to fool other people into believing that he is "doing something" when he's not.

Israel took over East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and declared the whole city of Jerusalem as its eternal capital in 1980. "The worldwide community must work now to protect the Palestinian people". Even the US' closest geopolitical allies - Japan, Britain, and France - voted in support of the draft.

Francois Delattre, France's ambassador to the United Nations, said his country regretted the USA decision over Jerusalem. Does the United States use its veto often? No.

Only 10 such sessions have ever been convened, and the last time the General Assembly met in such a session was in 2009 on Israeli actions in occupied Palestinian territories.

The Palestinian envoy led a group of Arab ambassadors in a meeting with Miroslav Lajcak, the president of the General Assembly, to schedule a vote on the draft resolution, probably on Thursday. Any outcome of such a session is non-binding, but carries political weight.
