Flynn pleads guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation

Mr Trump has been publicly dismissive of Mr Comey and of special counsel Robert Mueller's continuing investigation, and was often generous in his appraisal of Flynn, except to say his adviser could not stay in the job after misleading his vice president.

President Donald Trump says he had to fire his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, because of his lies to Vice President Mike Pence and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu, of California, also reacted on Twitter.

Flynn on Friday pled guilty to one count of lying to the FBI over December 2016 contacts with then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak and acknowledged that he is cooperating with Mueller's investigation. He is a good guy.

The existence of the text messages was brought to the attention of Mueller's office by the inspector general's office, which has been conducting a wide-ranging investigation of the FBI's handling of the Clinton email case.

The former army officer has now also agreed to work with the Mueller investigation which is examining links between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

The cooperation of Flynn, a senior campaign official and former top adviser on national security, could lead to inside information critical to Mueller's probe.

Earlier on Saturday, Trump also told reporters that his elections campaign was not engaged in any collusion with Russian Federation. It seems he's feeling smug about the turn of events at the White House. "I hope you can let this go", Trump said to Comey, according to Comey's memo on the conversation.

One of the only times I've ever seen my father, a career military man and Vietnam veteran, express genuine concern over the direction of our country was in the wake of the FBI's fall from grace under James Comey.

Dec 29: Following the sanctions, Flynn is advised by another Trump official that the team does not want to escalate the situation.

A spokesman for Mueller's office said Strzok was removed "immediately upon learning of the allegations, " and added that Page left the Mueller team two weeks before they became aware of the allegations. "But the existence of the text messages is likely to fuel claims by Mr. Trump that the F.B.I. has a bias against him and that he is a target of the "deep state" - a term used to describe the notion that government intelligence agencies secretly conspire together".

"Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn", Cobb said in a statement, adding that the special counsel's office "is moving with all deliberate speed and clears the way for a prompt and reasonable conclusion" to the Russian Federation investigation.
