Elderly couple said 60 pounds of pot was for Christmas presents

An elderly California couple's cross-country trip to deliver Christmas presents to their family was cut short by a traffic stop in Nebraska, where deputies discovered the gifts they meant to deliver was more than 60 pounds of marijuana.

Deputies found the high-grade marijuana packed in boxes under the pickup topper. They were simply spreading holiday cheer, they told authorities.

The couple, from northern California, told authorities they were en route to Vermont, and that "the marijuana was for Christmas presents", Sheriff's Lt. Paul Vrbka told the York News-Times.

Forecast: Blustery with lake snow tonight - Wednesday
Temperatures are already starting to fall and winds are picking up as an Arctic cold front moves through Upstate New York . Weather conditions during this period will likely lead to snow-covered, slippery roads, especially in more rural areas.

Deputies searched the vehicle after smelling the strong odor of raw marijuana and found roughly 60 pounds of it, with an estimated street value of more than $300,000, the department said in a statement. She was not jailed, however, because of medical issues, the York County Sheriff's Office said. No set court date for the Jirons has yet been reported. The York News-Times, a local newspaper, said they were arrested on Interstate 80, near the town of Bradshaw. The twosome were released on bail but face felony charges.

Sheriff's officers spotted the couple's truck crossing the center line and failing to signal, so they pulled it over.
