Tsunami warning for New Caledonia and Vanuatu

An quake has hit near New Caledonia, with warnings following that a tsunami may strike along Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

According to the US Geological Survey, the tremors hit at a depth 25km, around 85km east of the Loyalty Islands.

New Caledonia's civil security agency made no plans to evacuate coastal places immediately.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said hazardous tsunami waves were possible along the coastlines of New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

"Government agencies responsible for threatened coastal areas should take action to inform and instruct any coastal populations populations at risk", the PTWC said in an alert.

New Caledonia is part of the "Ring of Fire", a zone of tectonic activity around the Pacific that is subject to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
