Three US supercarriers to conduct joint drills in waters off Korean peninsula

According to reports, the exercise will involve seven South Korean and 11 US ships, as well as the USS Ronald Reagan, Theodore Roosevelt, and Nimitz. The exercises appear to be a large-scale show of force aimed at North Korea and scheduled to coincide with Trump's trip to Asia.

"It is a rare opportunity to train with two aircraft carriers together, and even rarer to be able to train with three", said U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander, Adm. Scott Swift, said in a Wednesday statement.

South Korea and the U.S. started large-scale military manoeuvers on Saturday off the Korean peninsula in which three American aircraft carriers are taking part.

Three nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and 11 Aegis ships from the U.S. Navy, as well as seven warships - including two Aegis destroyers - will be mobilized in the drills staged in the Korean Theater of Operations (KTO).

The strike force plans to conduct air defense drills, sea surveillance, replenishments at sea, defensive air combat training, close in-coordinated maneuvers, and other training.

The Reagan participated in the 2006 exercises, the Nimitz in 2007.

Units assigned to the strike force will conduct coordinated operations in global waters in order to demonstrate the U.S. Navy's unique capability to operate multiple carrier strike groups as a coordinated strike force effort.

The exercise will involve three of the Navy's 11 carriers, and concentrate more aircraft carriers the combined fleets of China and Russian Federation.

The strike exercise has come up amidst growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula over Pyongyang's nuclear arms and ballistic missile programs. It is committed to maintain the security commitments for the next 70 years, the report added.

During his recent visit to Seoul, Trump said, " North Korea is not the paradise your grandfather envisioned.

Also on Saturday, the US and South Korean navies launched four days of joint drills off the east coast of South Korea.

In a commentary Monday, North Korean state-run media said that "that no one can predict when the lunatic old man of the White House, lost to senses, will start a nuclear war against the DPRK".
