Trump brings NBC's 'license' into question after nuclear arsenal report

President Donald Trump on Wednesday lashed out at the independence of the news media, declaring that it is "frankly disgusting the press is able to write whatever it wants to write".

He continued, "With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for Country!", Mr Trump tweeted early Wednesday, US time.

The network said the president "surprised the military" by making a request for an nearly tenfold increase of nuclear weapons in a meeting over the summer, which allegedly prompted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to call Trump "a moron". 'Pure fiction, made up to demean.

President Donald Trump's insults, threats and challenges to journalists have led to questions of whether the Commander-in-Chief respects the First Amendment.

The remarks are apparently referencing the Federal Communications Commissions' (FCC) licensing policies, which allow companies like NBC and CNN to use public airwaves to broadcast their programs.

According to NBC, Trump's comments surprised officials - including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was overheard calling Trump a "moron" shortly after the meeting adjourned. United States news reports have painted the relationship between Trump and Tillerson as tense.

"The founders of our nation set as a cornerstone of our democracy the First Amendment, forever enshrining and protecting freedom of the press", Gordon Smith, the CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters and a former Republican senator, told The Hill.

During a joint meeting with Canadian Prime Minsiter Justin Trudeau at the White House Trump said that the current nuclear arsenal of the United States is already sufficient, and that no increase is needed.

Though it isn't logistically feasible to increase the US nuclear arsenal in the dramatic manner Trump reportedly desires, his interest follows a troubling pattern. "Believe me. Because I know what we have right now", Trump said.

"At that July 19 meeting, according to senior administration officials, Trump asked military leaders to fire the commander of us forces in Afghanistan and compared their advice to that of a NY restaurant consultant whose poor judgment cost a business valuable time and money", according to NBC's report.

The news comes at a time when Trump is expected within days to declare that Iran is not fulfilling its obligations under a 2015 anti-nuclear-proliferation deal it made with the Obama administration.
