The scariest part of Facebook's safety check in a mass shooting

In the wake of a national tragedy like Sunday night's shooting in Las Vegas - the deadliest mass shooting on USA soil in modern history - the internet can provide comfort and chaos in equal measure.

A link to Danley's Facebook page also made it to the front page but no sources debunking the unfounded allegations levied against him appeared in the first results, nor did any of the sources correctly identifying the shooter as Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old retired accountant.

4chan's inclusion anywhere near Google News' "authoritative" list is a troubling one, since 4chan users have consistently and repeatedly used the site to promote false stories about newsworthy figures. Mashable was able to replicate the result, but the links no longer appear in the module. The Oct. 2 post from Gateway Pundit, which got White House press credentials in February, was headlined, "Las Vegas shooter reportedly a Democrat who liked Rachel Maddow, Moveon.org and Associated with Anti-Trump Army". Millions of concerned people, some potentially with family members affected by the shooting, likely Googled or searched on Twitter and Facebook for scraps of information in the hours after the attack. (Very original.) The Verge reported also seeing photos from the AANR Midwest American Association for Nude Recreation on the Safety Check page for the Las Vegas mass shooting.

"This is a good demonstration of the magnitude of the challenge that these companies are facing in combating fake news and misinformation on their platforms", a spokesperson for Sen.

"Our Global Security Operations Center spotted these posts this morning and we have removed them", a Facebook spokesman wrote in an email.

Facebook did not respond to a follow-up question asking whether the original stories were surfaced algorithmically and then had to be replaced a human. "This should not have appeared for any queries, and we'll continue to make algorithmic improvements to prevent this from happening in the future". So when the 4chan story began to circulate, it instantly rose to the top of Google's Top Stories section for this set of queries.

In a statement, Facebook said, "We are working to fix the issue that allowed this to happen in the first place and deeply regret the confusion this caused".

Some lawmakers, particularly Democrats, have become increasingly concerned about the ability for tech platforms be unwittingly or purposefully co-opted into perpetuating fake news.

The boosting of misinformation comes at a bad time for both Google and Facebook.
