Russell Westbrook, Thunder agree to five-year extension

Oklahoma City announced on Friday a "multi-year contract extension" has been agreed with Westbrook, reportedly the most lucrative deal in National Basketball Association history.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed the deal. When factoring in the $28.5 million the six-time All-Star is set to make this year (bringing totals up to six years and $233 million), Westbrook's new contract is the largest in National Basketball Association history.

Westbrook signed a multi-year contract extension with the Thunder Friday, saying there is "no place I'd rather be than Oklahoma City".

It has been quite the offseason for the Oklahoma City Thunder as they have established a Big Three with Russell Westbrook, Paul George, and Carmelo Anthony. James will earn $33.3 million for the coming season and he's assured of guaranteed $35.6 million if he exercises his player option for 2018. It shows the Thunder are here, and here to stay with sustained success. Oklahoma City notably starts the 2017-18 regular season on October 19 against the aforementioned Knicks. Since then, the athletic point guard quickly developed into one of the league's brightest stars and formed a formidable 1-2 punch with Kevin Durant.

The timing of Westbrook's decision to sign the extension has also been a topic of interest across social media.

When Durant bolted for Golden State, Westbrook became the man in Oklahoma City. Might the Thunder ultimately regret paying Westbrook so much money as he's potentially declining as a player?

Westbrook, the league's reigning MVP, has been sitting on the deal for months; the Thunder first dangled the deal in July. Because of Westbrook's contract extension, there's at least a better chance that George and Anthony will choose do to do the same.

Westbrook couldn't have picked a better time to agree to such a historic deal, as he is just a season removed from his historic 2016-17 outing. Shedding smaller contracts would give the Thunder more than the midlevel exception to spend but still wouldn't allow the Thunder to be a player for the other top free agents on the market.
