Montana gets another extension

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has given ME until October 10, 2018, to meet the federal identification requirements.

Until then, Montana driver's licenses will be accepted by the Transportation Security Administration to board domestic, commercial flights and to access federal facilities. MVD will request another one year extension in 2018, and will continue to work with DHS to ensure full compliance with the law.

"While this agency fully anticipated this extension and saw no barrier to receiving it, we're pleased that DHS did the right thing for the people of the state", said South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) Executive Director Kevin Shwedo.

Verifying the applicant doesn't have a current license or ID card in another state. "That's something definitely we'll look at for REAL ID", he says, "as a way of trying to smooth that transition".

The most common federal use of state-issued ID is for air travel.

Homeland Security began enforcing the requirements in 2013, and Montana received two extensions but was denied a third last October because of the state law.

The federal Real ID Act was passed in 2005 in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, in which the perpetrators used fake identification to board airlines they used in the attacks. However, it costs an additional $15 for the card holder and requires multiple documents to apply, such as a USA passport, original birth certificate, original social security card, a utility bill, and a pay stub. "REAL ID is a priority for PennDOT, and we look forward to being able to offer REAL ID-compliant products as an option for our customers".
