Militants storm BSF camp; ASI, two militants killed

Kashmir rebels have battled Indian forces for decades, demanding either independence or a merger with Pakistan.

The attackers assaulted the heavily-guarded camp outside a regional airport in the area's main city of Srinagar in the early hours of Tuesday, hurling grenades and spraying automatic gunfire.

"Body of one of the terrorists has been found with his identity yet to ascertained", said Director General of Police SP Vaid.

#9:15 AM: Total three BSF jawans and a policeman were injured. No flight operation till security clearance. All morning flights to and from Srinagar airport were cancelled in view of them, officials said.

According to police sources, militants entered the 182 Battalion camp in Srinagar's Humhama area attacked the BSF camp at 4:30 AM. Airport under CRPF security, ' CRPF said. Islamist group Jaish-e-Mohammad has taken responsibility for the attack, Kashmir police chief Muneer Khan said. An officer said that during Pulwama attack, the suicide attackers wrote the name of "Afzal Guru Squad" on the wall of police lines.

The attackers breached four layers of security in the highly-protected area housing the Srinagar global airport and a posh neighbourhood where numerous state's Who's Who live.

New Delhi says Pakistan initiates cross-border firing to help anti-India elements cross into IoK Kashmir. They added the militants were lying low and stayed in south Kashmir for over a month before executing the attack.

"While two militants were killed during the night operations only, a third militant continued to fire on the forces from inside the camp before he was killed in the afternoon", a senior police official said.

Khan said the operation against the militants on Tuesday was a classic example of total coordination between different wings of the security forces.
