The attack which also injured 50 others has sent shockwaves throughout the country and indeed the world as all of the children killed in the attack were aged four.

The mother of one of the victims, four-year-old Juan Miguel Soares Silva, told O Globo newspaper that she had been considering enrolling him in another nursery prior to the attack.

Four toddlers and their teacher have died in Brazil after a nursery school security guard sprayed them with alcohol and set them on fire, officials said. The firefighter, who declined to give his name, said the majority of the victims ranged in age from 1 to 4 years old. The guard, who was aged about 50 and identified as Damiao Soares, died in the hospital several hours after the incident, which left him with burns all over his body, Santos said.

He is also alleged to have locked a teacher in a room before setting fire to the professional.

He had been fired from the Gente Inocente day care center after he returned from leave last month with a medical condition. He later died after succumbing to burn injuries in a local hospital.
