Arrest Warrant Obtained for Deandre Harris

Deandre Harris was participating in a counterprotest to the white nationalists' "Unite the Right" rally in August when a clash broke out in a parking garage near the University of Virginia campus.

The black man who was seen being beaten up in a parking garage at the August white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia is now facing a felony charge for the incident.

A local magistrate issued a warrant for Harris's arrest on Monday.

According to WVIR-TV, Harris is being charged with one count of malicious wounding for reportedly injuring an as-yet unidentified accuser.

Lt. Stephen Upman said that an unnamed alleged victim detailed the events that occurred prior to the beating of Harris.

Harris's attorney, S. Lee Merritt, told the Washington Post that the charge levied against his client is "clearly retaliatory".

"The victim went to the Magistrate's office, presented the facts of what occurred and attempted to obtain the warrant", the police in Charlottesville said in the statement.

"We find it highly offensive and upsetting, but what's more jarring is that he's been charged with the same crime as the men who attacked him", he said. Photos and videos of his attack and a skirmish with others can be found online.

A magistrate judge, without talking to witness Roberts, issued a warrant, apparently on the complaint of lawyers for the white nationalists. He also said he had cuts across his eyebrow, a chipped tooth and abrasions on his knees and elbows.

According to The Root, "Harris' head injuries were so severe that he required eight staples".

White supremacist Borden, hours before attacking Harris, threw the metal-tipped wood at photographer Roberts' head.

Ramos and Borden are due back in Charlottesville General District Court on Thursday, as is Richard Wilson Preston, a Baltimore Ku Klux Klan leader who is accused of firing a gun during the rally. Harris will turn himself in in the next coming days, Merritt said.
