Uber considers concessions to save London licence

The chief executive of Uber apologised Monday for "mistakes" made by the USA ride-sharing app after London authorities refused to renew its licence, but still vowed to appeal the decision. "Even though there is a legal process in place, I have asked TfL to make themselves available to meet with him", said Khan.

"Obviously I am pleased that he has acknowledged the issues that Uber faces in London", he said in a statement.

On Friday 22nd September 2017, Transport for London (TfL) informed Uber London Limited that it would not be renewing its private hire operator licence when its current licence expires on 30 September.

Uber is going to appeal the decision in the United Kingdom courts and can continue to operate while it does.

He wrote: "While Uber has revolutionised the way people move in cities around the world, it's equally true that we've got things wrong".

Khosrowshahi did not define which mistakes Uber had made in London.

A petition calling on London to overturn its decision not to renew Uber's licence had gathered more than 750,000 signatures on Monday.

"I have every sympathy with Uber drivers and customers affected by this decision, but their anger really should be directed at Uber", Khan added.

Uber has also been kicked out of Germany and Spain but was able to return to both countries after agreeing to only employ licensed taxi drivers.

Councils have now said that other licensing authorities across England will be watching how the dispute between Uber and TfL unfolds, and have claimed that the case is further evidence that modern laws must be brought in to regulate private hire taxi companies. In it, the company accused Transport for London of wanting to "restrict consumer choice" and making a decision that would affect the lives of hardworking drivers.

The initial background checks were carried out by a third party but TfL deemed them inadequate following a review.

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London and chairman of TfL, backed the Uber ban but denied playing any part in the decision. The authority also regrets the use of a software allowing the drivers to avoid being identified in areas where they do not have the right to operate and provide medical certificates not reliable.

"Until Uber gets this message then it will suffer lost trade as a result of its deteriorating reputation".

In the meantime, Londoners can continue to use Uber as usual until any challenge is concluded. Could this ruling force regulatory bodies in other cities to re-examine the legalities of how Uber operates?

The newspaper City AM has described the TfL decision as "political" saying, "Anyone who has used the app will know that TfL's decision to ban it on the grounds of safety is freaky, given that customers can track their ride via Global Positioning System and share their location and driver details with friends".
