Palestine granted membership of Interpol

74 interpol member states on Wednesday backed a motion to permit the Palestinians entry into the worldwide group.

"We will persist in our efforts to seek membership in other multinational agencies and organizations; this is consistent with the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and statehood".

On his side Elkin, stressed, "We must immediately cancel all cabinet decisions allowing facilities for to the Palestinian Authority over the past two years and withdraw the special transfer and travel permits given to the Palestinian Authority leaders", according to Israeli media.

Jaradat also rejected Israel's accusation that the Palestinians could undermine sensitive information available to Interpol members.

"It was a hard effort, but it produced results", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared happily at the time.

PA Deputy Foreign Minister Tayseer Jaradat on Monday told The Jerusalem Post that Israel's opposition to the Palestinians joining Interpol is "unreasonable".

The Palestinian candidacy was approved along with a bid by the Solomon Islands as the organisation held its annual general assembly in Beijing.

Cardin said any "red notices" issued by the Palestinians "will not be recognized in many countries, including the United States". One should therefore not be surprised when Palestinians conclude that their only non-violent path to ending the occupation is through internationalizing their cause.

In a statement, Interpol said red notices are not global arrest warrants, but rather act as an alert to member countries, and are issued based on a valid national arrest warrant.

The Palestinians already have been providing evidence in a preliminary war crimes investigation against Israel at the International Criminal Court, another international body they have joined.

Palestine would contribute 0.03 percent to Interpol's budget in 2018, the resolution also said.

"Such an acceptance sends a clear message to the Israeli government that we are not population centers at its mercy; we believe in a system that is based on the global rule of law and due process, and one which enforces accountability and cooperation at the worldwide level", she added.

To join the world's second-largest organization after the United Nations, the Palestinians needed two-thirds of all votes cast - they received three-quarters.
