But the North Korean leader said remarks by the "deranged" United States president convinced him he is right to develop weapons for North Korea.
China announced Saturday that a 3.4-magnitude natural disaster that was detected in North Korea could have been caused by an explosion that was part of a nuclear test.
"We have determined that this was caused by a natural quake, not a big one at that, and had nothing to do with any explosion", said Kim Seon-mi, an official at the Korea Meteorological Administration in Seoul, the South Korean capital.
"He, who cried out the extermination of the Korean nation, is a blood-thirsty beast indulged in massacring", the Korean Central News Agency cited the statement as saying.
The quake also caps a week in which President Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un exchanged increasingly bellicose insults and follows a threat on Thursday by the North to carry out a significantly more unsafe nuclear test.
Earlier this month, a 6.3 quake shook North Korea before the country's state media claimed that it had carried out a successful hydrogen bomb test. USA officials would not confirm that. "The depth is poorly constrained and has been held to 5km by the seismologist", USGS said in a statement.
The size of Saturday's tremor is smaller than the earthquakes registered as a result of all of North Korea's six nuclear tests.
- Aftershock of former test?
A second tremor soon after that test was possibly caused by a "cave-in", CENC said at the time.

USA women hit by acid attack in southern France
Two of the tourists suffered facial injuries and were rushed to hospital after the attack outside a Marseille train station. France has been on high alert for terrorism since 2015, after a series of attacks killed more than 230 people.
A UN-backed monitoring group said analysts were investigating Saturday's quake. Given that North Korea will continue its efforts to become a nuclear state, and given that military options are not viable, we may have to find a way to live with a nuclear North Korea.
While China reports a possible explosion in North Korea, the South's weather agency believes the quake was natural, noting that some of the characteristics of artificial earthquakes, specifically the sound waves, were not detected.
After the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, said President Donald Trump would "pay dearly" for threatening to "totally destroy" North Korea if the USA were forced to defend itself or its allies against a North Korean attack, Kim's foreign minister told reporters his country's response to Trump "could be the most powerful detonation of an H-bomb in the Pacific". Asked at a regular briefing about Trump's comment, Lu said, "As far as I know, what you have mentioned just now is not consistent with the facts".
Ri Il Ung, a 24-year-old university student who attended the rally, said: "Trump is a warmonger and a backstreet gangster".
North Korea's weakest nuclear test, its first one, conducted in 2006, generated a magnitude 4.3 quake. Some have argued that the North Korean crisis could be "solved" if China applied economic pressure on the isolated government.
Wang told Japan foreign minister Taro Kono on the sidelines of a United Nations meeting in NY that the situation on the Korean peninsula was getting increasingly serious and all sides needed to remain calm.
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson appealed to the global community, especially Russian Federation and China, to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, calling North Korea a case study of the failure to prevent rogue states from obtaining weapons of mass destruction.
Hydrogen bombs, or H-bombs, are thermonuclear weapons far more powerful than ordinary fission-based atomic bombs, and use a nuclear blast to generate the intense temperatures required for fusion to take place.
