Gulf Crisis: Boycotting countries extend demands-list deadline

NAN reports that on June 24, the four Arab states handed the country a list of 13 demands, including some likely to infuriate Doha and exacerbate the region's worst crisis in decades.

Qatar delivered its official response Monday to 13 demands made by a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states engaged in a blockade against their neighbor, as President Trump again weighed in on the regional dispute.

They accused Doha of supporting extremism and of being too close to regional arch-rival Iran, which Qatar has strongly denied.

The 48-hour extension was in response to a request by the Kuwaiti emir who is acting as mediator in the Gulf crisis.

Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar's foreign minister, was received by Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah on Monday to hand over a letter from Qatar's emir, according to state-run Kuwait News Agency.

They have not specified what further sanctions they could impose on Doha but commercial bankers in the region believe that Saudi, Emirati and Bahraini banks might pull deposits and interbank loans from Qatar.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir called the list "non-negotiable" last week.

Late on Sunday, the four countries said it would meet on Wednesday in Cairo to discuss their next steps. He said, "This list of demands will be rejected, it will not be accepted". "We are ready to face the consequences", Al Thani said Saturday in Rome, where he met with his Italian counterpart.

Doha has rejected the demands and said it will not be meeting them, and it is unclear what will happen if the additional deadline passes on Tuesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the situation by phone in separate calls Sunday with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Qatar's Sheikh Tamim and Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The foreign minister stressed that any country is free to raise grievances with Qatar, provided it has proof, but such conflicts should be worked out by negotiation, not by imposing ultimatums.

Trump reiterates the next day that financing for terrorism must stop.

The statement said that contacts are underway to contain the crisis as soon as possible, stressing that the solution through dialogue and diplomatic means is the strategic choice of the State of Qatar.
