Two New Mexicans in the field at national spelling bee

During last year's Scripps National Spelling Bee, in front of the television cameras and under the bright lights, Melinda Buhlman didn't miss a single word. People in MS, notoriously one of the tougher state names to spell, apparently have their state's spelling down, but struggle with the word "nanny". Merriam Webster defines the word as "capable of being perceived, especially by the senses". Then, without hesitating, she proceeded to correctly spell the word: h-o-s-p-i-t-a-l-i-t-y.

Tarsier was among a list of 400 study words sent to all spellers advancing to the national finals. She's a 14-year-old 8 grader from Queens Lake Middle School in Williamsburg. After claiming first place at the Badger State Spelling Bee in March, 13-year-old Bautista returns to the national forum for his third time.

On Tuesday, Google tweeted "America's Most Misspelled Words" in honor of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, with state-by-state data on the top "how to spell" searches of 2017. "Instead of relying on the root of the word, instead I've been trying to focus on word patterns", said Hussain.

There are 291 spellers competing - 277 of them are from the United States and 14 are from other worldwide areas. They lamented their misses and gossiped about what score might be "the cutoff" for making the top 50. Oral spelling begins this morning at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, and wraps up Thursday night. In 2009, a fellow speller from the Cleveland area who was one year younger than he asked for his help. The announcement of finalists is expected to occur at 6 p.m.at the latest. "People don't have any hard feelings and are like, 'Go ahead, do the best you can.' Everybody is just super excited".
