Mom left 2 kids in hot auto as punishment, authorities say

A Texas mother who left her two young children in a hot vehicle as punishment has been arrested for their deaths.

Randolph was arrested on Friday for two counts of causing injury to a child. Officials said one of the kids refused to get out of the auto, so she shut the door to teach her daughter "a lesson", thinking they could get themselves out of the vehicle. After being ignored by the girl, Randolph shut the door, went inside, smoked marijuana and then took a two to three-hour nap, according to the newspaper.

At the time, the temperature outside was hovering around 96 degrees.

Online jail records don't list an attorney for her.

She then fell asleep for hours. The woman's arrest follows that of recent Kerr County, Texas mother, Amanda Hawkins whose two children also died after being left in a hot auto as the 19 year old teen 'partied'.

After searching for them for more than half an hour, she said, she found them locked in a small four-door vehicle on the property. The children were unresponsive and Randolph said she broke a window to gain entry.

Investigator say Randolph finally confessed to first finding the kids playing in the auto.

She said she then broke the vehicle window to corroborate her initial story.

Randolph initially said she was inside her residence folding laundry and watching television as the children played in an enclosed back porch visible from the living room.

The Texas mom is now in custody at Park County Jail. Both kids were pronounced dead shortly after 4:30 p.m. During subsequent interviews with the police and with Texas Rangers, Randolph kept changing her story.

A ruling on the cause and manner of death in each child is pending, according to the medical examiner's website.

Sheriff Fowler originally said on May 26, that any incidents involving any child are hard ones, but this call was especially heartbreaking with the unfortunate deaths of the two children.
