Why Melania Trump covers her head one day and not the next

Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, First lady Melania Trump, President Donald Trump and Pope Francis pose during their private audience at the Vatican.

"We can use peace", said the president, acknowledging the symbolism.

Their "cordial discussions" covered addressed their joint hopes for continuing collaboration between the U.S. Catholic Church and the U.S. government.

President Trump kindly accepted his thoughtful gift.

Mr Trump responded: "We can use peace".

But while Trump and Francis may be in brief agreement, Trump's prior anti-Muslim rhetoric " including his musing that Islam "hates" the West " is the antithesis of what the pope has been preaching about a need for dialogue with Muslims.

But the people of Brussels aren't exactly excited about Trump's visit. He, I think, told both Cardinal Parolin and also told Prime Minister (Paolo) Gentiloni that this is something that he would be taking up for a decision when we return from this trip.

The Pope returned the gesture by presenting Mr. Trump with a medal by a Roman artist which featured an olive branch which he said represented peace.

Leo Varadkar will today publish his policy document
The process for electing the next Leader of Fine Gael is defined in Rule 49 of the Fine Gael Constitution and Rules. But his sole rival, Simon Coveney, was forced to deny that the race was all but over.

Trump gave the pope a first-edition set of writings from Martin Luther King Jr., including five books.

The men shook hands and Trump could be heard saying it was "an honour" to be there.

Before parting ways, Trump thanked Francis and said, "I won't forget what you said".

The pope's approach, he said, is "to meet the major players in the field in order to reason together and to propose to everyone the greatest good, exercising the soft power that seems to me to be the specific trait of his global policy".

After the meeting, the President went to meet with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and the Vatican Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher. They disagree openly on such weighty issues as immigration, climate change and economic policy. When he changed his mind, the Vatican squeezed him in at 8:30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, an unusual day and an unusually early time.

The meeting with the pope was the third stop on Mr Trump's nine-day foreign tour, and part of his world tour of religions after meeting leaders of Muslim nations in Saudi Arabia and visiting holy sites in Jerusalem.

And even the pontiff's congratulatory message sent to mark Trump's inauguration contained a sly reference to their disagreement, as the pope wrote that he hoped the United States' worldwide stature would "continue to be measured above all by its concern for the poor, the outcast and those in need".
