US Sanctions Members of Venezuela's Supreme Court for Power Grab

"The Venezuelan people are suffering from a collapsing economy brought about by their government's mismanagement and corruption", he said.

While Gonsalves did not name the countries said to be behind the efforts to topple Maduro, Almagro has the support of the organization's largest member states such as the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and Colombia. "Members of the country's Supreme Court of J us tice have exacerbated the situation by consistently interfering with the legislative branch's authority", U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets against the Maduro's government, demanding elections, freedom for jailed activists, foreign aid and autonomy for the opposition-led legislature.

A senior administration official accused these eight judges of "contributing to the rupture of democratic norms". A ruling by the court in late March stripping the opposition-controlled assembly of its remaining powers ignited a deadly wave of unrest.

The announcement came not long after President Trump addressed the Venezuelan crisis in remarks at the White House with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

The U.S. move marks the second round of sanctions Trump has imposed on high-level Venezuelan officials since taking office. Cruz said the judges "actively undermine democracy" in a tweet. That designation means that as of Thursday, the eight magistrates' assets in the U.S are frozen and people in the US are prohibited from doing business or transacting with them.

"Venezuela is a mess", Trump said.

"The United States has shed light on the plan it is leading to intervene in Venezuela", she said.

"President Trump has made clear that the USA will not tolerate bad actors that exist in Venezuela under President Maduro", they added. "Those folks should be on the lookout for further actions".

"The global community needs to say "respect the human rights of your people" or this is going to go in the direction we've seen so many others go", Haley said.

Another sanctioned magistrate, Calixto Ortega, is a long-time diplomat who was sent by Maduro in 2014 to Aruba to negotiate the release of a retired army general who had been arrested on a US drug warrant.

The ruling was later partially reversed amidinternational criticism, but it sparked a protest movement that has continued for almost two months and left more than 40 people dead.

Like the US, several countries in the region have also expressed concern.

In March, Venezuela's foreign minister, Delcy Rodriguez, expressed to his country's chief rabbi, Isaac Cohen, "the desire to establish full relations with the State of Israel" eight years after the South American nation expelled its Israeli ambassador.
