Trump hails heroes at Arlington

Trump's remarks at the wreath-laying ceremony were his first comments in public since returning to the United States from his nine-day trip overseas.

President Donald Trump offered a solemn tribute to America's service members during a Memorial Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery Monday, honoring those who gave their lives in war and those now serving in defense of the country.

"Thank you for joining us as we honor the courageous warriors who gave their lives for ours-Spending their last moments on this earth in defense of this great country and its people", Trump began.

During his first Memorial Day as President, Trump also honoured the dedication and sacrifice of the fallen heroes, as well as that of the families they have left behind during a speech at the cemetery's Amphitheater.

Trump's remarks grew more personal as he addressed the death of Homeland Security Secretary Gen. John Kelly's fallen son, Robert.

Trump also paused to talk to a young boy dressed in a crisp Marine uniform. "He understands more than most ever could, or ever will, the wounds and burdens of war".

Robert Kelly, 29, was killed in a roadside bomb blast in 2010 during a foot patrol in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. We grieve with you. "They died in war so that we can live in peace", said President Trump.

Trump previewed the address Saturday before he flew home from Italy, the final stop on his first trip overseas since taking office.

Trump went on to honor former Sen. Bob Dole during the speech and turned to the wars of today by remembering Army Spc. Elizabeth Dole, and other Gold Star families and service men and women in the audience.

Though he acknowledged those who died in every war beginning with the Revolutionary War, Trump singled out what he called "a new generation of American patriot" which has defended the United States "from an enemy that uses the murder of innocents to wage war on humanity itself".

The event was also attended by Vice President Mike Pence, Defense Secretary James Mattis, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford.

In the first of two tweets Trump sent out on Monday, he says: "Today we remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving".

Secretary of Defense James Mattis introduced Mr. Trump and recognized the "fighting spirit" of USA military veterans.

"To the entire Kelly family, today, 300 million American hearts are joined together with you".

The president first participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, before addressing a crowd of family members of the fallen gathered there to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
