Rouhani sweeps second term as Iran's president

Riding a large turnout from Iran's urban middle classes, President Hassan Rouhani won re-election in a landslide Saturday, giving him a mandate to continue his quest to expand personal freedoms and open Iran's ailing economy to global investors.

Earlier, Iran's Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazli said the incumbent President of Iran has won Friday's presidential election. They will fight tooth and tail at every turn over the next four years to stop or frustrate President Rouhani's efforts to push through his reforms.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said Iran's presidential election was an internal matter and called on Tehran to adhere to United Nations resolutions on its ballistic missiles and to stop supporting "terrorism".

Out of more than 40 million votes cast, he received 57%, or close to 23m votes in total.

Because Iran's two-term presidents are often lame ducks, it's not uncommon for the political system they operate in - especially the portions subject to election - to turn its attention to the next election and undermine the president's interests to suit its own. Trump and Saudi King Salman signed a series of defence agreements, including a weapons deal worth $110 billion U.S., taking effect immediately.

The re-elected President will have to navigate a tricky relationship with Washington, which appears at best ambivalent about a nuclear accord agreed by former President Barack Obama.

Now, Fisk continues, "everything depends on how [Rouhani] will respond to the madness of the Trump regime and its willingness to support the Sunni war machine with more than $100bn of weapons against Iran and its allies and friends". The deal was as unpopular among Iranian hard-liners as it was among conservative Americans.

The election was a victory for moderate and reformist Iranians who have sought an end to their country's worldwide isolation and a relaxation of social restrictions imposed by the conservative mullahs. Trump chose to do so, but also imposed narrow sanctions against two Iranian defense officials and an Iranian company that the US government said were linked to Iran's ballistic missile program.

He won a resounding victory on Saturday against his opponent Ebrahim Raisi.

"The Iranian nation has chosen the path of interaction with the world, a path which is distant from extremism and violence", Mr Rouhani said in his first speech after the victory.

Ahmadi says the initial vote count has the moderate cleric Rouhani with 14.6 million votes.
