McGregor signs deal for Mayweather fight

White said his plan now was to try to lure the American out retirement for a super fight with McGregor.

"This is an unbelievable opportunity for me and I can't wait to get started".

UFC president Dana White announced on Wednesday he'd struck a deal with McGregor on the lucrative fight and would now turn his attention to Mayweather and the fighter's advisor, Al Haymon.

McGregor earned his featherweight interim title at #UFC189 with a victory over Chad Mendes, his undisputed featherweight title at #UFC194 with a 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo, and his record-breaking lightweight title at #UFC205.

The move is critical because McGregor said he has agreed to terms with the UFC for a potential boxing match against Mayweather. In fact, he's not a fan of any of the current crop of MMA's elite wanting to test the boxing waters.

Team McGregor believe the longer it takes Mayweather to agree to his side of the deal the better it suits them as it will give them more time to prepare themselves for taking on arguably one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Mayweather is now in London with protege Gervonta Davis, who makes his first defense of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super featherweight title against Liam Walsh in the British capital on Saturday.

The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on.

McGregor was granted a boxing licence in California a year ago, but denied one in Nevada due to an outstanding $60,000 fine after throwing bottles at Nate Diaz last August.

Questions remain about how much money both fighters would get or when the fight would even take place. Congratulations to all parties involved. Promoter and former multiple champion Oscar de la Hoya has said that a bout between the two would be an "embarrassment" for the sport.

The $100 million guarantee "is only going to happen if the [purse] split is substantially in the favor of Mayweather", the Times was told.

He's also set to become the richest Irish sportsperson in history, after he reached the first stage of an agreement to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr for the tidy sum of $75 million yesterday morning.
